View Full Version : 2001 vs 2000 Heads and Intake
Excuse my ignorance here guys, would it be possible to just swap 2001 heads and intake onto a 2000 engine? Is there any difference between the two years?

The heads are identical, both are split port. The intakes however are slightly different with the 01 having small butterflys in the runners (IMRC's).

you can remove the imrc's to use them on your 2000 if you want.
Thanks guys, I appreciate it!

01 lowers also don't have a hole for the water temp sensor
01 uppers have the hole that the plugwire harnesses clip into in a different
spot. the coilpack mounts also have three posts and 99-00 have 4.

Brett, I barely see you on here over a 2 year span... Now you are on a bunch... Are you done with school? Sounds like you are making some changes.
I wouldn't use an 01 lower. Its more trouble than its worth to delete the IMRCs. Just find a 99-00 lower.
Pete,
I'll finally be done by the end of the year. After 22 years straight of school (elementary through PhD) I'm fairly sick of school :) !! I saw your time at the V6 shootout, congrats on that and on getting your house done.
As far as the car goes, yeah I'm going to have to make some changes sooner or later. I got caught in an awful storm in May and was driving home around midnight. Well 500 feet from my apartment I go through some water which I thought was just another puddle. Turns out it was about 1 and half feet deep for about 25 feet, just enough for a bunch of water to get into the engine. It stalled on me and wouldn't start, so I let it sit over night and it still wouldn't start.
So to make this long story shorter, the procharger is back at ATI getting new seals put on and I have 2 cylinders down 50% and 1 cylinder down 30%. Have no idea what exactly is wrong with the engine, so the plan is to put the procharger back on and drive it gently until I figure out what to do about the engine. May be time for a new engine.
Cool about school....
Not cool about the car.... That sucks about the water. I have a hard time believing that going through the puddle would have cost you 3 cylinders. Its possible you bent the rods...just unlikely. Usually they will stall before they hurt themselves too bad.
Let us know what the autopsy shows.
Yeah unfortunately I think I contributed to the problem because when I went back to try to start the car it was completely dead. So I tried to jump it and I almost got it to turn over; however, while I was doing that I think I was pushing more water through the motor. Well it finally completely locked up on me. Stupid on my part.
So if it was just the rods that would be fine because I want to buy forged rods and pistons anyways, but I don't want to do that if there is something else wrong with the motor that we can't find. I just don't have the ability to break down an engine to figure out the problem. Do you think it could be anything else besides the rods? Do you think I could have cracked the block doing this?
I'll let you know what happens.
If you damaged valves and they are stuck/bent open. It will cause low cylinder pressures. Trying to turn it over with water still in it might have damaged a few of them. I could believe that.
So let me ask for your opinion? Knowing I can't do this myself and would have to pay someone to do it.
Would you have them break down the engine (32,000 miles on it), try to fix the problem and maybe build it up a little while it's apart? Or would you just put the supercharger back on, drive it gently and hope it lasts until I have another engine ready to drop in the car? The latter being the advice I'm getting now.
I did option 2 when I blew my 1st 3.8. It ran OK but didn't make much power. You can always sell whats left of the old engine after the swap.
You won't need intakes etc... I would just get a shortblock and good heads. Its a great excuse to go 4.2 while your at it.
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it! I'll definitely go 4.2!!
I ttt'd my 4.2 post on the Engine board
