Also, what if any, are the differences between years for this crank?

Cross drilling, chamfering, what all can be done to make a 4.2 last longer? Is there a way to make the crank longer for extra cubes? Can the crank be shot peened or hardened?

well... one thing that helps is a full balance of the entire rotating assembly. shotpeen is basically a stress reliever. my crank in my truck was welded on and afterward was balanced shotpeened magnafluxed which is just an xray for any hairline fractures.

the 4.2 crank is indeed a cast steel crank so it should hold up to some power as it is.

I believe there is a process out there called titanium nitrate coating... which puts a permanent bond coating of titanium around whatever it is you are coating. it's $ but i've heard it can help some but who knows. is it worth it?... probably not.

Just stick with a good balanced rotating assembly... have everything magnafluxed to make sure all parts are solid.
