When i turn my steering wheel to make a turn i hear a click sound. Its not really loud but its audible enough to annoy me. Anyone know what it could be?

umm...yer turn signal?? images/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Does it happen either direction, or just one? Does the sound seem to be coming from the steering wheel/column area, or from outside the cab in the rack/suspension area?

turn signal? Mine didnt come with one images/smiles/icon_razz.gif .

It happens in both directions and it sounds like its coming from the rack/pinion area.

A worn steering shaft, especially in the lower part where it attaches to the rack, might be causing this. I replaced mine with a newer one becuase of slop/noise recently. With the car off, reach under the dash and grab ahold of the steering shaft, then rock the wheel gently back and forth. If the shaft is bad, you can kind of feel the clicking and sloppiness in it.

Before replacing anything, I would check all bolts--shaft to rack, rack to crossmember, tie rods. Might just be a loose bolt or something.

That's all I can think of......

Good info, ill do the test tommorrow. How intesive is the job timewise and moneywise if the shaft is bad?

I got my shaft from
midwestmustang.net/ (http://midwestmustang.net/) for $25 shipped, if I remember right. It was a used one, in good condition. The shaft bolts together about halfway down the column, and it is only the lower half you would be replacing. The other end goes through the firewall and bolts to the rack. It isn't really a difficult job, but kind of awkward because it is a tight space, and the grommet in the firewall is tricky. I think it took me about an hour.

Here is a pic of the shaft:

Same exact problem with my 2001 stang with 10k miles.

It should be somewhat under warranty. Even though I hate taking my car into them I think I will have to.

Loose A arm bolts can do that, they are a bitch to tighten though.

PLEASE explain how it is the a-arm, when this click happens when sitting still? the a-arm moves up and down, it does not rotate.

k, so where is the click when i'm going over bumps?

and why does it happen at a certain point in the steering rotation?

the a-arm is at a different angle when actually taking a corner

According to my 2000 Ford Workshop Information CD, a mechanical clicking noise in the steering is an idication of a bad power steering pump. The power steering pump rotor slippers are too long, or there is excessive rotor slipper-to-slot clearance or you have a damaged or worn rotor assembly.

If you've got the CD, look under:

General Information
...Noise, Vibration, and Harshness
......Diagnosis & Testing
.........Symptom Chart -Steering Noise

well it seems they have many different words for many different noises, so "click" might not be the right term.

i will have to read into it more

I have the same problem everyone else is having. I get a loud ticking/popping noise in the drivers side front, like something is about to break. I thought it was my brake caliper bolts not being tight enough but there torqued on there. I'm going to try and tighten the A-arm bolts this week and see if the sound will go away. It does get irritating and embarassing when you pull into a parking lot or over a bump and it makes this sound.
