My tranny is messed up bad. 2nd gear grinds 80% of the time and down shifting to 1st grinds alot. The other gears are ok. What is the bets route to take? Get a used t-5 or get mine rebuilt/repaired. I am very very tight on cash. This is on a 95 with 130K.

BTW-The clutch is relatively new and I replcaed the quadrant.

I would try to drop the tranny and see if you can fix it. If not get another tranny.

Buy a synchro kit or an entire rebuild kit (make sure it comes with synchros...one time I bought one that didn't have synchros images/smiles/icon_mad.gif ) . It wouldn't hurt to buy a T5 manual either. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Could you suggest a good book and also a good manufacturer for the rebuild kit?

Also, what type of special tools do I need?

I don't have a lot of auto-mech experience but I am always wanting to learn more (anything I know I have learned on the stang in the last 3 years), consider myself fairly mechanically inclined and am willing/excited to expand my tool collection (I have been buying new ones as needed). I have replaced all springs, shocks & struts, upgraded to 99+ calipers, put on SS lines, replaced the water pump, steering rack and of course all the PM like fluids and filters with the use of the Ford service manual. Do you think I could feasibly rebuild my T-5? Oh also I do have access to a lift if needed.

if you can afford it buy a used t-5 that someone has already blown up and rebuild it, that way you still have access to your car. it can be driven without using 2nd gear. just run it up a little more in 1st and you might have to lug it in 3rd.

I just found a company called Halon Motor Sports that sells a T-5 rebuild video. I am about to order it and see what all this involves. Anyone have any experience with this company/video? Thanks

Hey Kmoney, I know it's been a long time, but I'm now in a similar position as you were. Did you end up getting the video? Did you do the work yourself? How tough was it?

Enquiring minds (and a grinding transmission) want to know!

Why do you downshift into first at any time?

i would see if its gonna cost alot if it is then just go buy a new tranny for 750 bucks. Cuz rebuilds usually have an issue of some sort, unless you get a really good mechanic.

I got the one from cartapes.com "rebuilding your t5 manual transmission"
& was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

most places you are looking at 600-900 bucks for rebuild, and even then it may not be right SO WHY not just buy a new one with all gears BRAND NEW and everything working perfectly.

Actually if I could get a T5 for 700 bucks I would, but I've been looking all over the place, and the cheapest I could find a T5 was for 1150. The most I want to spend is 500, but if I can get a new one for 700, then I'll wait and just get that.

So for those of you saying that you can get a BRAND NEW World Class T5 for 700 bucks, post the links. I need'em.

Otherwise, I'm just gonna go for a rebuild. I'm getting quotes for rebuilds at around 500 and it's looking like I could do it myself for under 300.

Well, SpectorV, we'll see what happens. Looking at the site, I was presented with this:

Code: M7003Z
Price: $1,150.00

Not exactly 750, but I'll ring'em up on Monday and get the real price.

I ended up finding a slighly used T-5 for $450 shipped and installed it myself. Its been running great since then, I hope it lasts. Supposedly the tranny only had 30-35K on it and it is very smooth shifting so I hope it will. I also installed an AL DS and a SPEC stage II clutch when I put in the new tranny. A Pro 5.0 shifter is on the way! I love having 2nd gear again!

Arg. No dice. Called'em up and got the 1150 price. I couldn't do that. I guess the next best thing is to get a used T5 and get the one in my car rebuilt. Then I can sell one or the other.
